OZTUG/ITUG Conference Draws Pan Asian Audience

Two hundred members of the HP NonStop™ community, representing more than 15 countries from around the Asia Pacific region, met 22-23 July at the scenic Manly Pacific Parkroyal Hotel. The two-day conference with surrounding social and educational activities provided delegates with both a diverse technical program and trade show.

“I’m extremely pleased with the diversity at this year’s event,” commented Tony Bond, OZTUG Conference Chair. “This is the first year that we collaborated with ITUG on the event pre-planning and we were very fortunate to have their expertise both in building a programme of truly dynamic NonStop customer and HP speakers, and in getting the marketing message out beyond our traditional OZTUG borders. The interest of the trade and financial press was a measure of the caliber and visibility of this event.”

Unparalleled Programming
Following an impressive, relaxing HP-sponsored reception at the renowned Sydney Opera House the previous evening and a huge “G-Day” from OZTUG Chairman Tony Bond, Paul Brandling, Managing Director, HP South Pacific, took the stage kicking off an outstanding morning lineup of featured speakers. ITUG Chairman Yves Rouchou, of Euronext in France, provided delegates with a succinct overview of ITUG and its RAVE initiatives: regions, advocacy, volunteers, and events. Chris Rooke, Vice President of Product Management, Marketing, and Solutions, HP, gave the much anticipated NonStop Enterprise Business Update and was followed by a special user presentation from Stan Prushik, Vice President, Securities Industry Automation Corporation (SIAC), a joint subsidiary of the New York Stock Exchange and the American Stock Exchange. The morning’s featured speakers were rounded out with an independent analyst viewpoint from Henry Harteveldt, Senior Analyst Research Focus, Forrester Research, who spoke of the growing need for high-speed computing.

Technical Breakout Sessions, Vendor Tracks, an entertaining “Shannon Knows HP” presentation, and dedicated exhibits viewing filled the afternoon and lead into an extremely well-attended networking dinner sponsored by HP.

“Equal in value to the excellent education available here at the 2002 OZTUG/ITUG event has been the continuous ability to network with colleagues from all around the AP region on both technical and business issues in a comfortable, conversational setting,” said Jennie Bond with Business Continuity Pty. Ltd., an OZTUG member and member of the ITUG Board of Directors.

Day two launched with a very welcomed featured presentation from Mike Muller, Vice President and General Manager for HP in Asia Pacific, who clearly outlined plans for ensuring a bolstered NonStop presence in the Asia Pacific, emphasing that, “Scott Stollard, our Senior Vice President and General Manager for BCSG, aptly has called NonStop, the jewel in the crown of HP.”

Scott Healy, Vice President at Sabre, the number one computer reservation system and largest distributor of travel in the world, followed Muller and gave an energetic featured user presentation on the implementation of a new eCommerce application. Delegates spent the rest of the day in technical session breakouts, vendor tracks, and the trade show and concluded their day and conference experience with an interactive Hot Topics panel session.

“I am very impressed with what I have seen here at the conference and my trip was well worth it,” stated ITUG Chairman Yves Rouchou, “I found the experience very enriching both professionally and personally.”

Next year’s event is scheduled for 28-29 July in Sydney, Australia.
